Important traffic information

The road traffic in the Republic of Lithuania drives on the right.                                                            

At any time of day it is required to drive with lights on.                                                               

If the vehicle is equipped with safety belts it is required to fasten them.                                                             

Children younger than 12 years and lower than 150 cm can be carried in the front passenger seat of a car, bus or truck cab only in specific seats that are adapted to their height and weight.

Children younger than 3 years can be carried on the back seat of car only in specific seats that are adapted to their  height and weight.                                                              

The speed limits for personal cars:

130 km/h – on highway from 1st April until 31st October.                            

110 km/h – on highway from 1st November until 31st March; on motorway  –  from 1st April until 31st October.                            

100 km/h – on motorway from 1st November until 31st October.                            

90 km/h – on roads with asphalt or concrete surface.                            

70 km/h – on other roads.                        

50 km/h – in living areas.                     

20 km/h – in living areas and courtyards of dwelling houses.       

Penalties:

Penalties for speeding:

Up to 10 km/h – warning.                            

10-20 km/h – 40 - 100 Lt penalty.                            

20-30 km/h – 100 - 300 Lt penalty.                            

30-40 km/h – 400 - 600 Lt penalty. For those who have driver license less then 2 years – 400 - 600 Lt penalty and deprivation of driver licence for 3 – 6 months.                 

40-50 km/h – 600 - 800 Lt penalty and deprivation of driver licence for 6 – 12 months. 

More than 50 km/h – 1000 - 1500 Lt penalty and deprivation of driver licence for 1 – 3 months or administrative arrest for 7 days. For those who have their driver licence less than two years – 1000 Lt - 1500 Lt penalty and deprivation of driver licence for 12 – 18 months. 

Driving while unfit through drink or drugs or with excess of alcohol:

Drivers whos determined alcohol level in blood is up to 0.4 parts per million aren't punished. Those who have their driver licence less than 2 years aren't punished when alcohol level in blood is up to 0.2 parts per million.                            

If the level of alcohol in blood is higher or driver is under the influence of narcotics, psychotropic or other psychoactive substances then driver should be punished by large penalty or long-term deprivation of driver licence.
